Couple of photos of Chevy and John. I was wondering if you knew what happened these days?

I think this one is where they sneaked into Milosz Forman’s set of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest: http://11.media.tumblr.com/vWmLsf1oEk2lj05rnYvOjUKKo1_400.jpg

And I can’t tell where this next one is; maybe a coworker’s in the hospital? http://www.photographersgallery.com/i/full/chase_belushi.gif

That’s funny- a friend of mine actually sent me that first photo, which is great. Couldn’t tell you the context for either picture, though. That second one sort of looks like the middle of an all-night writing session or something. I know that Belushi was pretty jealous of Chevy’s success (although he shouldn’t have been), so I feel like that middle finger is only partially ironic. Thanks for sharing these.

I feel the same way about the middle finger polaroid.

Dude, you have no idea how pleasantly strange it was to find your blog. When and how did you become interested in Chevy Chase?

I became intrigued with the guy when I got the ’75-’76 SNL box two Christmases ago. Before I began the series I was most excited to see Aykroyd and Belushi, but when I began watching it was like, “I didn’t know Chevy Chase was this cool!” His work on Weekend Update actually inspired me; and in the sketches (although he’s clearly one of the lesser actors) he exudes more charisma than is reasonably possible.

How did all his effortless cool degrade to effortless uncool… That’s what your blog is “exploring”… And it’s like an idea I had a few months ago! You’re pulling it off in a more interesting way than I was thinking of, though.

So again–if you don’t mind me asking, how’d you get interested in the guy?

Thanks for the nice words, Adam. I wrote a short story about him for this writing club I’m a part of, because I thought it would be funny. Then I thought it would be funny to write more. And at this point, I think I’ve written about fifteen or so. I’m interested in him for basically the same reason you cite: effortless cool to effortless uncool. There’s something oddly poignant about that. But yes, he couldn’t have been cooler or more hip on SNL- especially with that great hair. In any case, thanks for the message- and I will update soon. I promise.

Darren, some interesting stuff in this Chase interview from the early 80’s:

Towards the end, Tom Snyder asks chase about how negative reviews have affected his confidence. Chase is honest enough in his answer that I wish they gave him more time.

One more thing–the entire Friar’s Roast has been uploaded to youtube!

Great work here, dude. I hope you’re having as much fun writing it as I have reading it.
